请问您参加过的最早的 VLDB 是哪一届？我最早参加的 VLDB 是 1982 年的那届，但由于当时我正在从学生签证转为绿卡，不想冒险出国，所以没有去墨西哥城参加那届会议。我参加过的最早的 VLDB 是 1987 年在英国布莱顿举行的那届。算上 VLDB2024，我本来应该参加了 50 场 VLDB 中的 29 场😍

HALF A CENTURY OF VLDB: A CELEBRATION & MEMORIES
This year’s International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (#VLDB) https://vldb.org/2024/ in Guangzhou (China) will be the 50th edition of that conference series. In celebration of that, I have just learnt that there will be a special session in Guangzhou. I have been invited to host that session by Lei Chen, a General Chair of #VLDB2024. My working title for this session is “Half a Century of VLDB: A Celebration and Memories”.
If you have any inputs on the content for this session, I would love to hear from you. Any VLDB photos, especially from the early years, would be also be very interesting to show off. Please send me in high resolution any such photos that you have. In the early 1980s, I was aware of some of the controversies related to VLDB and ACM - Association for Computing Machinery. Just recently I came across the 1982 paper https://doi.org/10.1145/984505.984506 by the founder of VLDB and ACM TODS David K. Hsiao which details some of the problems that he faced. Just yesterday I noticed that there is an Oral History interview of David Hsiao done by Thomas Haigh in June 2009 https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/1141880.2421276
Let me know which was the earliest VLDB that you attended. The first VLDB that I had a paper in was the 1982 one but I didn’t go to that conference in Mexico City since I was transitioning from a student visa to a green card, and I didn’t want to take a risk by going abroad during that period. The first VLDB that I attended was the 1987 one in Brighton, UK. Including VLDB2024, I would have attended 29 of the 50 VLDBs 😍
