Using SQL to draw the Chinese "Fu" for blessing a coming up new year

Preface

Last Staturday I've glanced at the homepage of modb and noticed that there was launching an interesting activity (SQL blessing competition) at the right top corner of the homepage (perhaps the place where is on the right top corner is what you should often pay close attention to on modb), also found out it just started launching last Friday. In other words the aim of this competition is using SQL to draw a Chinese "Fu" for blessing a coming up new year. About more details of the competition you can see here.


As well-known as, the funny competition is particularly appropriate for developers, but I also get interested it as a DBA and am able to enhance my ability writing SQL statements via the great opportunity of the activity.

The Normal Chinese Fu

In this section I'll show a normal Chinese "Fu" respective on both Oracle SQL*Plus and MogDB online experience environment by a bunch of SQL code snippet. Ok, let's get started it now!

First of all we usually draw the normal Chinese "Fu" on the UltraEdit (a cool text editor) by "*", like this:


Then we prepare using SQL function RPAD (which is supported by both Oracle and MogDB) to output how many continuous blank characters or "*" as a group on each line (possibly there would have so many groups on each line). Based on the similar thought eventually we can finish writing the full SQL code that is as below.

Secondly, we run the prior SQL code on the SQL*Plus of oracle database, but it highly recommends adding the following two SET environment variables before those SQL code.

Thirdly, we execute the previous SQL code on the MogDB online experience platform (beforehand we must run a sql script for being compatible with some Oracle/MySQL packages). Such as,

The Normal Chinese Fu Wrapped By Square Rotating 45 Angles In Clockwise

The normal Chinese "Fu" wrapped by square might be a little difficult than the preceding normal Chinese "Fu" in this section. Please keep your patience and try your effort.

It's pretty cool. Let's do a comparison for these 4 number of Chinese "Fu". Yes, the sole output on MogDB is really close to the Chinese "Fu", particularly which is wrapped by square rotating 45 angles in clockwise. Because MogDB is the business release version based on the openGauss in China, which is more suitable to the usage habits (or even, China culture) of Chinese.
